The Lord of the abyss.
It ended up with a Rolex in the Marianas
Fifty years ago, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh descended to 10,902 feet, the deepest marine trench in the world. A watch with them ready to exceed all limits

It is January 23, 1960. At about 320 km south of the island of Guam, in the middle Pacific Ocean, the Man is about to take another major step towards knowledge. The bathyscaphe Trieste (built in Italy, baptized in the waters of Capri, but owned by the U.S. Navy) is ready to explore the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the planet: a frightening abyss at 10,902 meters below sea level (measurement is final last year), 2,052 meters beyond the height of Mount Everest. Under the hull is a sphere where they took place the Swiss engineer and oceanographer Jacques Piccard, 37, and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, 28. The two men are the first to descend to such depths: no one has ever tried before, nobody will try later.

The scientific world is in suspense and even the industry is not indifferent: the submersible (18 meters long and wide 3:30) uses advanced technologies for the times and is built with materials that would withstand the high pressures of those depths. But what are the limits?

Someone is following with particular attention Piccard. It's the Rolex, which has known September 30, 1953 off the island of Ponza. That day the physicist Auguste Piccard, known to be increased to almost 16,000 feet in the balloon and for having invented the bathyscaphe, had fallen with his son Jacques in the depths of the Tyrrhenian Sea on board the Trieste, which was the designer. For the tour of the Rolex compatriot was the ideal model to test its depth Deep Sea Special (stainless steel, size and massive glass dome of considerable thickness), fixed outside the hull. And when, after two hours, the Trieste was resurfaced by 3150 meters and touched (in '56 will go to less than 3,700), the integrity of the clock became a powerful promotional vehicle for the house in Geneva and the new model range Submariner which would be marketed shortly.

The experiment then takes decisive in 1960, when the U.S. Navy is developing the Project Nekton, with the aim of obtaining data on the penetration of sunlight and the sounds of the ocean deeps. The protagonist is again Trieste, bought a couple of years before the Americans, taking Jacques Piccard to train personnel for the operation and maintenance. After nine months of preparation and 64 dives, Piccard and Walsh are ready: Jan. 23, in five hours to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench, known as Challenger Deep which, not unsurprisingly, are sole, shrimp and seaweed. To Piccard and Walsh is a historical will no longer repeat: the only two means to fall again in the Marianas (robot Kaiko Japanese between 1995 and 1998 and the American Nereus in 2009) will be unmanned.

The hull of the Trieste is again set a Deep Sea Special, which had endured a terrible pressure, representing more than one ton per square centimeter. A surfacing is completed, the Rolex is still intact and fully functional. Two days after Piccard sends the following telegram to the headquarters in Geneva: "Glad to tell you your clock accurate to 11,000 feet as the surface. Best regards, Jacques Piccard ". Text soon to become the protagonist of a famous advertising campaign, while the heroic Deep Sea Special was put into retirement.

The Swiss company does not intend to spend that small fortune of fame. First realized thirty copies for promotional purposes, celebratory and informative, with the maximum depth reached engraved on the back, a different movement and small aesthetic differences. Subsequently produces another small series without movement, mainly for exposure. Some of these specimens are now exhibited in famous museums, others have become part of private collections.

For its part, however, the Piccard family added a new chapter to his epic: psychiatrist and adventurer, Bertrand (son of Jacques) has already taken the plunge: Be the first to circumnavigate the world in a balloon (1999). Now it has developed the "Solar Impulse", the first solar-powered aircraft capable of flying day and night without fuel, with which in 2012 will make the flight across the Atlantic. Good blood does not lie.

Time is the most undefinable yet paradoxical of things; the past is gone, the future is not come, and the present becomes the past even while we attempt to define it, and, like the flash of lightning, at once exists and expires.  ~Charles Caleb Colton
