......It is in fact not just a simplified version of the 321, but an improved one too, produced with the aim of improving performance and streamlining its production in ever-increasing quantities as a result of the continued success of the Speedmaster on the market since its first appearance in 1965 on the wrist of Edward White. The modern 861 is no doubt less beautiful, aethetically-speaking, than the classic 321, but it is more precise, more robust, more reliable and offered better performance at lower cost. Production stood at around 500 000 units. Pink-gold to begin with, then yellow-gold from 1992, then rhodium-plated in 1996. It was re-launched in 1861 and is still manufactured today.

The Lemania cal. 1873 (aka Omega cal. 861 and its derivatives &endash; the 1861, 863 & 1863, etc.) is arguably the most robust mechanical wrist watch chronograph movement the Swiss have ever produced. The ease of service and virtually indestructible build of the cal. 1873 make it run circles around not only the ETA/Valjoux 77XX series of movements but also its predecessor, the prettier column-wheeled Lemania cal. 2310/27CH (aka the Omega cal.321). No, I'm not saying the 321 was a bad movement, by far not! It wouldn't have passed all those rigorous NASA tests if it weren't. But you do need to get one of these movements serviced by a real expert watchmaker or else you're SOL and the lack of availability of parts won't help you either. A running conversation I have with my watchmaker is how many of these come his way after being butchered by other watchmakers in a last-ditch effort by the owner to just get the damned thing to work properly. As well, the lack of availability of key parts, as mentioned, does not help.
