40 χρονια moonwatch ,1969-2009
« στις: Ιούλιος 15, 2009, 02:40:28 πμ »
The historic flight dell'Apollo 11 began July 16. After entering lunar orbit, Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. and Neil A. Armstrong moved into Lem, the module to the moon, while the control module was assigned to pilot Michael Collins.
The lunar module touched the surface of the satellite July 20, near the edge of the Sea of Tranquility and a few hours after Armstrong set foot on lunar soil, in the words: "This is a small step for a man but one giant leap for humanity ".
The astronaut was joined by Aldrin and walked two hours along the surface of the moon, experiencing a force of gravity equal to one sixth of the land, gathered 21 kg of soil samples, take photographs and installed an experimental apparatus for the analysis of solar wind, a reflector laser and a laboratory for measuring earthquakes, thus raising a U.S. flag and communicate via satellite with U.S. President Richard Nixon, while millions of people were following the live broadcast. Armstrong and Aldrin left the satellite using the upper stage of Lem and exploiting lower as launching pad. The module lift was abandoned after the coupling with the control module and the two astronauts moved back to the ship. The return flight dell'Apollo 11 presented no problems and the ship ammar July 24 in the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii, where it was easily recovered ;)

Αυτά μπορεί να τα φορούσε, αλλά όχι επειδή ήταν Γάλλος. Βέλγος "ήταν".

Speedmaster's relationship with outer space began when NASA's flight equipment buyer went to Corrigan's watch shop in Texas to purchase a chronograph. This was in 1961. At that time, the NASA flight equipment buyer purchased five chronographs, all of different brands, including the Omega Speedmaster. The intended use for the chronographs was not made clear. What brought the NASA equipment buyer to a jeweler's on a Texas street comer was most likely none other than President Kennedy's speech.
NASA procured a large number of Speedmaster's during the 1960's for use as an Space Flight Crew chronograph after extensive testing prior to the first Gemini flight.

Note: We don't know the number or specific model(s) that were acquired but this was done before the switch over to c.861 movement.
In 1966 Omega added the term "Professional" to the Speedmaster after becoming aware of NASA's adoption of the Speedmaster.

There are really only two people that are really in a position to know which movement was the first watch worn on the moon for certain: Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin

It has been documented that Armstrong did not wear his Speedmaster on his walk on the moon. An instrument had malfunctioned during the LEM's Decent and his Speedmaster was left in the LEM to serve as a replacement.

[Armstrong, from the 1969 Technical Debrief - "Now, a preliminary comment (on the EVA Preps) has to do with the longer time that it took than during our simulations. It is attributable to the fact that, when you do simulations of EVA Prep, you have a clean cockpit and you have all the things that you're going to use there in the cockpit and nothing else. In reality, you have a lot of checklists, data, food packages, stowage places filled with odds and ends, binoculars, stop watches, and assorted things, each of which you feel obliged to evaluate as to whether its stowage position is satisfactory for EVA, and whether you might want to change anything from the pre-flight plans. For example, our mission timer was out, and we decided we had better leave one wristwatch inside in case it (the one taken outside) got damaged. We would have at least one working watch to back up the mission timer or to use in place of the mission timer, in case we could not get it going again."] ... [The astronauts each had an Omega Speedmaster Professional.]

Later on in the log the following conversation transpires:

108:54:54 McCandless: Neil, this is Houston. Will you give us hack when you start your chronometer. Over.
108:55:03 Armstrong: Roger.
108:55:08 Aldrin: Give it to them later.
108:55:12 Armstrong: Okay. Okay, let's go to dump.
108:55:17 Aldrin: Dump.
108:55:18 Armstrong: Go to dump. (Long Pause)
108:55:40 Aldrin: Houston, I'll set my watch at 56. Over.
108:55:50 McCandless: Roger.
[Buzz is wearing his watch on his suit sleeve and, apparently, is setting his at 56 minutes after the hour, corresponding to the upcoming Ground Elapsed Time of 108:56.]
108:56:00 Aldrin: 3, 2, 1.
108:56:02 Aldrin: Mark.
[Buzz reopened the dump valve on his mark. This is the start of the EVA.]
[Aldrin - "I'm sure that Neil didn't wear his watch out on the surface. I'm sure he put it with the Velcro strap up in the AOT."]
[Armstrong - "Someone, perhaps in correspondence, asked me about that. And I could not remember, although it seems quite logical, given the mission timer situation, that we would have left one watch inside."]
Thus it is apparent that Aldrin's Speedmaster was the first worn on the moon

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A NEWS CONFERENCE:

The original space cowboys come to Basel

πρωτο πλανο :λιβανεζος ;)

Omega presented one of the most compelling and best-attended events at this year’s Baselworld trade fair. Four astronauts who wore their OMEGA Speedmasters on the Moon were joined by other key players in NASA’s manned space program at a news conference at the Swatch Group Plaza in the middle of the Hall of Dreams on Saturday, March 28th.

On the 20th of July, Omega and the rest of the world will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing and the event was an advance celebration of one of mankind’s most historic adventures

Moonwalkers Buzz Aldrin, Charles Duke, Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan took the stage along with their colleague Thomas Stafford, who commanded the Apollo 10 mission, and Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier. The dream panel for space aficionados was rounded out by Gerald Griffin, one of NASA’s lead flight directors for  the Apollo missions and Jim Ragan, the aerospace engineer responsible for the chronograph tests which led to the selection of the Speedmaster as the only watch  qualified for each of NASA’s manned space flights since May of 1963.

The event began with comments from Omega president Stephen Urquhart, who spoke with pride about his company’s long relationship with NASA and its astronauts.

Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek remembered that the Apollo 11 landing had impressed him so much as a 14-year-old that his parents bought him a Speedmaster at the time. He described the astronauts as “my personal heroes”. Hayek added, “We all know what it is to dream and these guys lived our dreams better than anyone else.”

The first one to take his place on stage was Buzz Aldrin who was, with Neil Armstrong, one of the first men to land on the Moon and the second to set foot on the lunar surface. He recalled the launch day vividly: “I found myself standing by myself. In the distance I could see the sun and the waves of the ocean and the millions of people who had come to watch the launch. I knew that it was a moment I would never forget.”

Gerald Griffin, a legendary flight director for ¨the Apollo missions said that as Apollo 11’s Lunar Module descended to the Moon’s surface, there was an unusual stillness at Mission Control in Houston. “It was normally a beehive of activity,” he said, “but for those seconds, you could hear a pin drop. No one breathed until we heard Neil say, ‘Houston. Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.’” Talking about the unique challenges of operating the Lunar Rover on the Moon’s surface on later missions, Charles Duke of Apollo 16 pointed out that the Lunar Rover had the potential to be driven quite a distance from the landing site. “But we never went more than a few kilometres away because if it broke down, we’d have to walk back.”

Jim Ragan was responsible for testing the chronographs to be used by NASA’s astronauts. Ragan described placing a “nebulous order for price quotes on chronographs.” He said that the suppliers in the early 1960s knew the watches were for NASA but had no idea what they were to be used for.  Referring to the OMEGA Speedmaster, Ragan said, “To the best of my knowledge, the Speedmaster is the only piece of hardware which was used from the very beginning without any modification.”  OMEGA president Urquhart quickly commented to loud applause, “And that’s why forty years later we haven’t changed it.”

Gene Cernan who walked on the Moon with Harrison Schmitt in the last Apollo mission added, “In time, I can assure you that we will send a manned mission to Mars and when that happens, the first astronaut to step onto the Martian surface will be wearing a Speedmaster.”

Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier was part of four space shuttle missions, having flown on Atlantis, Endeavour, Columbia and Discovery. He was also the first European to take a space walk when he had the responsibility of repairing the Hubble Space Telescope.  Nicollier described OMEGA’s new challenge – the company is providing capital and technological support to the Solar Impulse project whose aim is to circumnavigate the globe in an airplane powered only by the sun. Nicollier is actively involved in the project, having designed a special tool to help pilots land the aircraft.

At the end of the news conference, Buzz Aldrin was presented with an OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition Moonwatch which was released to commemorate his and Neil Armstrong’s historic walks on the Moon nearly 40 years ago.
