Limited Edition Breitling Watch Auction To Support Honor Flight For US VeteransThe Honor Flight Network is a unique charity dedicated to recognizing the lives of United States war veterans. The goal of the charity is simple, to offer free trips for US veterans to travel to Washington D.C. in order to visit our national war memorial sites. The purpose is to offer a final opportunity for our nation’s most senior veterans to recall and recognize their contribution to American war efforts. Honor Flight prioritizes those veterans who are the oldest in age and who may have never visited the national war memorials during their lives, which currently is for the most part Word War II veterans.
Honor Flight began in 2005 and was featured in the recent, award-winning 2013 film of the same name. Honor Flights are extremely emotional experiences, because many of the veterans have never been properly thanks for their service. No doubt the current focus is on aging WWII veterans who are currently in their 80s and 90s. According to Honor Flight, many of the trips are races against the mortality clock for many of its guests. For most, the trip to see the memorial that was only completed in 2005, is the last trip of their lives. The charity claims that about 640 WWII veterans die each day.
In support of the Honor Flight charity, Swiss watch maker Breitling has produced a limited edition timepiece that is currently being auctioned online. The full proceeds of the watch will go to the charity, while sales of the remaining pieces will further benefit Honor Flight. Breitling has a long history not only with aviation, but also with the military. Their connection with US armed forced goes back many years, and will likely last far into the future.
The limited edition Breitling Honor Flight watch is based on the brand’s popular Navitimer 01. The 44mm wide steel case comes matched to a steel metal bracelet. The iconic Navitimer gained popularity with pilot in the 1950s because it contains a slide-rule bezel for calculations make in-flight. It would have been really cool if the Navitimer was just a bit older and Breitling could claim that some US veterans wore it during WWII.
This special version of the Navitimer 01 has a blue and white dial and features the Honor Flight logo, along with a unique caseback engraving. The watch houses an in-house made Breitling caliber 01 automatic chronograph movement. Breitling will produce just 55 Honor Flight watches, but the first to be sold is the model currently being auctioned off for the Honor Flight charity here. The auction ends on October 30th, 2013.
